We are an inclusive, multicultural, multi-religious city and country,” Crombie said Friday, explaining that after missing Wednesday’s council meeting because she was out of the province attending a conference, she was dismayed to hear the parking exemption did not get approved, but was instead referred back to staff for a report to determine which major religious holidays should qualify for city-wide parking exemptions.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF WHITBY SUNRISE

MEETING HIGHLIGHTS FOR JULY 22nd 2015

HAPPY BUCKS:

Jamie Tostik, our server extraordinaire, has accepted a new position in Peterborough so will no longer be with us.  She wished us well and thanked the Club for making her feel so much a part of it.  (Editor’s note:  I am happy for Jamie, sad for us… and even sadder still when I realized that her replacement was Shawn.  This I find especially troubling.)

Mike Yakamovich crossed a piece from his bucket list by jumping out of an airplane in tandem, freefalling and landing in a Niagara field.  (Editor’s note:  There’s only one thing I like to do in tandem and it doesn’t involve an airplane…but maybe with Tom Petty singing Free Fallin’ in the background.)

Diane Allen thanked Niecy Linton and friend Chris for taking her grandson for a ride in his Porsche on the weekend.

Terry Caputo thanked all of the volunteers who worked so hard at Ribfest, while he was at his Lake Como retreat.  (Editor’s note:  He’s Batman for God’s sake!  Surely he could have returned from Italy for a quick shift or two.)

Blair Buchanan gave $20.00 and announced the birth of Jan’s baby, Isla Blair. (Editor’s note:  Let me congratulate Jan and tell the other Blair to keep his waste management team away from this helpless little tyke.)

Linda Raney then presented a gift from the Club to Blair for their new addition … presumably a little broom and dustpan but we may never really know.

Jeff Warford stood to thank all of those who volunteered so capably for Ribfest. (Editor’s note:  Speaking for so many I simply say, hats off to you sir.  A difficult job and so very well executed.)

Bob Morrow announced that he had his dog groomed in the driveway by a mobile pet person, www.wagzonwheelz.com .  The job was perfect and the cost was on par with Petsmart.  (Editor’s note:  I’m not sure why this was important but he’s a Paul Harris Fellow and he doesn’t get out much, so I’m letting this one pass.)

Joanne Alexander gave $15.00 and told us that daughter Shannon’s father-in-law is suffering with a flesh-eating disease.  She also gave a shout-out to Terry and the team of people with whom he will be working.

Bob McAllister made reference to the fact that the secretary appears to be off his game…the newsletter from last week arrived “five minutes ago.”  He then went on to thank that guy for the work he puts into the newsletter each week. (Editor’s note:  I am overwhelmed with emotion right now.  Seriously, to be thanked for my “work” by a guy who has a school named after him is a humbling moment as a Rotarian.)

Kathy Beattie, promoting for the other Club, told us that they have their 20th annual golf tournament soon.  The cost is $195.00 per person.  She also told us that Durham Festival is partnering this year with Harbour Days on August 13th through 15th at the Whitby Marina.  Our Club is being asked to help run some of the events.  More will follow this newsletter.

Dave MacAskill, referring to Peter Bocking dressed as ‘The Flash’, told us that this was the second Whitby Flash, the first being our own Don Fleming.  He then went on to congratulate especially the Mounts and Denise Branton for participating in the long ride to Deb Murray’s parents’ cottage on the weekend.  Finally, Dave gave a special shout-out to Sue Miller, who worked so hard to design the cycling jerseys for no compensation whatsoever.  (Editor’s note:  Was Peter Bocking wearing a cup? Do all superheroes wear cups or they don’t have to because they’re superheroes? So many questions, so little time.)

Gerry Waterhouse thanked all for their President’s Night donations, which totaled $10,342.00.  He also made special mention of Andrew Butterworth, who is now hosting 23 people for dinner… a popular silent auction gift to the Club.

Vicki Kemp and son took Mako camping on Balsam Lake over the weekend and said “She is such a girl.”  But they toughed out some very rainy weather and had great fun.  She also reminded us to drop by her house on Sunday to say goodbye to Mako.

DRAWS:

The door prize was won by a guest; and the 50/50 draw was won by Dave Robinet, the guy with the perfect job.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

In the last newsletter, I posted some incorrect information about Denise Branton and so to correct it officially, she donated all of her Ribfest tips from Friday and Saturday nights; and she won the $300.00 from the 50/50, which she donated.  Very cool Denise…we missed you this morning.  Linda Raney introduced two young women, Ashley and Diane, both of whom have received Rotary bursaries for their university education.  Terry introduced our guests, including Vince John and Isaac Van Kessel, the latter of whom is now semi-traumatized after spending the session with Bob McAllister.  And our new president, Terry Caputo, spent 15 minutes speaking about his time at the annual conference, the events he attended and his take-aways; and his goals for our club during the upcoming year.

EDITOR’S NOTEBOOK:

Apropos of nothing, I was at a cottage on Faraday Lake this past weekend and was wakened early in the dark on Saturday morning by an incredibly vicious thunderstorm.  The bed actually vibrated for the first time in a long while, as I was explaining to Wayne.  At this moment of the meeting, Jeff Warford put his hand on Wayne’s shoulder and said to him, “You’ve lost your little friend.”  Wayne immediately looked at his lap…honestly…and it took me a minute to realize that Jeff was talking about Wayne’s cane.  The room was filled with yellow and blue Rotary cycling shirts this morning and I wasn’t overwhelmed … at least until Kate Babony appeared wearing her jersey.  It was only then that I appreciated the thought and detail that went into the creation of these things and the quality and elasticity of the fabric.  Let’s face it, I may have noticed the same thing if Mark Wittgen had donned his shirt but it just wouldn’t have been the same.  Pete wasn’t with us this morning because he and Cheryl are vacationing at Cleveland’s House on Lake Rosseau.  Cheryl posted this picture of Pete in the bingo hall there last night, so apparently he’s as wild and crazy in the north as
he is here.
In addition to giving me the most awesome pen today… it has a flashlight that so very much extends its utility… Guy Viggers told the table that apparently a recent study has revealed that women are more susceptible to alzheimer’s; and it progresses in them twice as fast as it does in men.  We all looked at Don and concluded that there are clearly deviations from the norm in every study.
